One thesaurus definition of “foundation” is that of a fundamental principle or underlying concept. Other words often used in conjunction with foundation include “rock-solid.” As part of the International College of Surgeons (ICS), International Surgery has a “rock-solid” foundation, as the official journal of the College.

The International College of Surgeons is a highly professional medical society comprised of surgeons and all other physicians who work with and support surgeons, with members in over 100 countries of the world. In 2015, the ICS celebrates the 80th anniversary of its founding, with the first issue of International Surgery published in July 1938. This is no small matter, in that any organization that survives for 80 years must have a well based foundation. The principles on which the ICS was founded remain in place and become stronger and stronger as time passes. Fellowship in the ICS is open to all races and creeds.

The ICS has four missions, including education, research, communication, and leadership. International Surgery fulfills all four of these missions as an educational journal containing original research. With a global readership reach in over 100 countries, International Surgery very effectively communicates globally to Fellows in the College, as well as other readers. Through the fulfillment of these missions, International Surgery is leading the way in publishing the very best scientific and medical research results in the world.

All global Fellows in the College receive all issues of International Surgery on a complimentary basis and pay no fee. This means that the published scientific and medical research results are influencing scientific and medical research on a global basis. The value of publishing research results in International Surgery is very significant.

The missions of the International College of Surgeons and the global readership of International Surgery assure that our journal is rock solid. Solid value is conveyed to every reader and will continue well into the future.

As Editor-in-Chief of International Surgery, and as a Past World President of the International College of Surgeons, I have a strong sense of serving the scientific and medical communities in the best possible manner. We have the foundation to continue doing so with International Surgery.
